They solve different problems.
So instead of asking “Which one is better?”, ask:
“What am I building?”
My rule of thumb:
Content → Astro
UI → React
Application → Next.js
Use Astro When Content & Performance Come First
Choose Astro when your website is primarily content-driven.
Great for:
Marketing websites
Blogs
Documentation
Portfolios
SEO-heavy websites
Content hubs
Landing pages
Business websites
Astro sends very little JavaScript by default, which makes it a great choice when you want fast-loading pages without unnecessary client-side code.
And if you need React components, you can still use them inside Astro when necessary.
Think:
Content first → Astro
Use React When You're Building an Interactive UI
React is a UI library, not a complete full-stack framework.
It's a great choice when you're primarily building an interactive application or interface.
For example:
Dashboards
Admin panels
Interactive tools
Complex UI systems
Internal applications
Highly interactive components
React gives you flexibility, but you'll often need to make additional decisions around routing, data fetching, rendering, deployment, and other application concerns.
Think:
Interactive UI → React
Use Next.js When You Need a Full Web Application
Next.js builds on React and gives you a more complete framework for building production web applications.
It's particularly useful for:
SaaS products
E-commerce
Web applications
Customer dashboards
Authentication-heavy applications
Complex APIs
Personalized experiences
Dynamic websites
Applications requiring multiple rendering strategies
You get routing, server-side capabilities, data fetching patterns, API functionality, and much more within one framework.
Think:
Application + React → Next.js
The Simple Decision
One More Important Thing
Don't choose a framework because it's trending.
Choose it based on the architecture your product actually needs.
A content-heavy website doesn't need a heavy application framework just because you can use one.
And a complex SaaS product probably shouldn't be built like a static marketing website.
Astro isn't better than Next.js.
Next.js isn't better than React.
React isn't better than Astro.
They simply have different jobs.
My rule of thumb:
Content → Astro
UI → React
Application → Next.js
Once you understand that distinction, choosing a framework becomes much easier.
